How to measure

Place your phone flat on the footplate with the screen facing up and the top of the phone pointing toward the bow. Tap Start sensor to read the angle. Use Calibrate on a known level surface first if needed.

Optimal range: 37° – 47°  |  Standard: 42°

What the angle means

  • Steeper angle (45–47°) — higher force potential per stroke, but needs good ankle mobility.
  • Shallower angle (37–40°) — easier compression, better for limited ankle flexibility.
  • Too steep (> 49°) — heels lift excessively, compression suffers, injury risk rises.
  • Too flat (< 35°) — power drops, shins vertical early, drive sequence breaks.

Rule of thumb: taller rowers and bigger feet usually need a flatter setting to avoid over-compressing. Adjust in 1° increments and test over 500–1000 m.

Pitch is the angle of the oarlock pin relative to vertical (perpendicular to the water). It determines how steeply the blade enters and exits the water.

  • Too much pitch — blade dives deep, creates drag, hard to extract.
  • Too little pitch — blade washes out, slips at the catch, poor connection.
  • Correct pitch — clean entry, solid connection through the drive, easy extraction.
  • Sculling: 3–4° (inboard pitch), sometimes 4–5° for heavier crews.
  • Sweep: 3–4° standard, 4–5° for eights with powerful crews.
  • Some coaches adjust ±0.5° based on water conditions.
  1. Place the pitch meter on the oarlock pin.
  2. Zero the meter with the boat level.
  3. Read the angle with the gate closed.
  4. Check both sides — they should match within 0.5°.

Adjust inboard when you want to change leverage / gearing.

Adjust pitch when you want to change blade depth / connection without changing leverage.

Small pitch changes (0.5–1°) are often easier to test than inboard changes.
